We went to see Trail of Dead at Dantes last night at it was really cool to see them at such a small club. The opening band was so awful in there mix of one chord blue cheer and Jesus Lizard but it made even more thankful when Trail of Dead came on. I always like rock shows that are just on the edge of falling apart and this was perfect for me.
They a nice mix of new and old songs and the dueling drummers is a sight to see.
Two drummers, three guitars at times and at 1 hour 45 minutes, it was great rock n roll to be had. If you get the chance, and want to see a rock show where your head might actually come off your shoulders, go and see them
Bloc Party will release ‘Intimacy Remixed’ on the 11th of May, and to mark the occasion, the band have made parts for three of the album’s tracks available for you to remix if you want to. If you dig the band, and get into remixing original tracks, get on over to their site and get a download before their server crashes.
On the bus home tonight I decided to search YouTube for some Fleet Foxes videos to watch. Instead I ran across this cover of a Fleet Foxes song by a Swedish sister group called First Aid Kit. I rushed home and bought their album and they are blowing my mind. The just made the best of 2008 list for me. You can buy an MP3 download of their album off their YouTube profile page. It’s less than $7.
These are the “lyrics” to Pena, off Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica Album. Thanks Cap!
Intro to Pena
Don Van Vliet: Heh-heh-ha-ha . . . Fast ‘n bulbous.
The Mascara Snake: Fast ‘n bulbous!
Don Van Vliet: That’s . . . heh-heh.
FZ: OK, do it again, then you’ve won.
Don Van Vliet: I love that, I love those words.
The Mascara Snake: Fast ‘n bulbous!
Don Van Vliet: That’s right, The Mascara Snake, fast ‘n bulbous!
The Mascara Snake: Bulbous also tapered.
Don Van Vliet: Yeah, but you’ve gotta wait until I say, “Also, a tin teardrop.”
The Mascara Snake: Oh, Christ.
FZ: Alright, again, beginning.
The Mascara Snake: Fast ‘n bulbous!
Don Van Vliet: That’s right, The Mascara Snake, fast ‘n bulbous! Also, a tin teardrop.
The Mascara Snake: Bulbous also tapered.
Don Van Vliet: That’s right!
What do you get when you cross Ween, New Pornographers, the Rolling Stones, The Bee Gees and Aretha Franklin? You get the Mgmt. And what a sweet, glorious pot of jambalaya it is. I heard a lot of the same sounds coming out of Band of Bees and you know what a huge fan I am of theirs. Mgmt is full of gooey layers of analog keyboards and organs, deep melodies bass, and anthemic sing along lyrics. Your heart will swoon and your hips will shake.
The Beta Band has long since split. Radiohead have gone off the rails into the the vastness that is Thom Yorkes mind. What we really need is another great band from across the pond to crack open our heads and let all the good stuff out. Here it is.Businessmen and Ghosts is an epic 29 song psychodelic reverb extravoganza with just the right hint of electronica. Somehow the Velvet Underground and Can had an alien family and raised them on The Jesus and Mary Chain and Spiritualized.I’m pretty sure they have a Roland RE-201 Space Echo sitting atop a holy shrine in their house somewhere, where they bring burnt offerings and speak in tongues as the spirit of tape echo brings forth great things. All must be cleansed.
